Here's a comfort-food classic, a dish that's sure to get everyone to the table.

Preheat the oven to 205 C (400 F).

Remove the tofu from the package and drain off all excess liquid. Wrap in a towel and place a heavy object on top. Press for 15 minutes while you prep the rest of the ingredients. .

Whisk the salt, sugar, paprika, chili powder, garlic powder, black pepper and cumin in a small dish.

Add bell peppers and onion to a bowl and toss with 15 mL (1 Tbsp) olive oil and half of the spice mix. Transfer to one side of a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

When the tofu is done pressing, slice into thin strips. Toss with remaining 15 mL (1 Tbsp) olive oil and remaining spice mix. Add to the baking sheet, keeping separate from the veggies. Avoid letting the tofu pieces touch each other or anything else; this will help it get crispier. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until the tofu is crispy. Remove from the oven and serve with warm tortillas, avocado, salsa and fresh lime. Makes 4 servings
1 395-g (14-oz) block extra-firm tofu
5 mL (1 tsp) salt
2 mL (½ tsp) sugar
5 mL (1 tsp) paprika
5 mL (1 tsp) chili powder
2 mL (½ tsp) garlic powder
1 mL (¼ tsp) black pepper
1 mL (¼ tsp) cumin
2 bell peppers, any colour, thinly sliced
1 red onion, thinly sliced
30 mL (2 Tbsp) olive oil, divided
Tortillas, avocado or guacamole, salsa or pico de gallo and fresh lime, for serving
